Sinker EDM

  • 8 Charmilles manual machines
  • 2 Charmilles manual machines with orbiting capabilities
  • 2 CNC Mitsubishi machines with automatic tool changers
Sinker EDM, also called Die Sinking EDM, Ram EDM, Conventional EDM or Plunger EDM, uses spark erosion to machine or remove material from any electrically conductive material using a precision machined electrode submerged in a insulating EDM liquid. In Sinker EDM, a graphite or copper electrode is machined into the desired (negative) shape and fed into the workpiece on the end of a vertical ram creating the desired cavity.
Sinker EDM Capabilities:

Wire EDM

Wire EDM, also called Traveling Wire EDM, WEDM, Wire Cutting or Wire Burning uses spark erosion to machine or remove material with a continuous traveling brass or zinc-coated brass wire from any electrically conductive material. Unified Tool has 4 high-speed Charmilles Wire EDM machines that are fully automated and operate 24 hour/day, seven days a week.
  • Maximum taper angle: 45 degrees
  • Wire diameters from .004" to .012"

CNC EDM Drilling

EDM Drilling, also called Micro Hole Drilling, Micro Hole EDM Drilling, EDM Hole Popping, Small Hole EDM Drilling or Fast Hole EDM is a specialized field of EDM machining. A small diameter electrode (.004" - .118" dia) spins about a spindle and plunges into the workpiece much like a drill & drill bit. The electrode is electrically charged by a servo-controlled generator producing the spark similar to the Sinker EDM Process, but unlike Sinker EDM its only objective is to drill holes. EDM Drilling is in many ways similar to a conventional drilling operation, but offers the advantage of EDM. Very low machining forces with the EDM process makes the drilling of exotic, hardened or delicate materials onto a flat, rounded or angled surface possible.
Unified Tool is experienced in the manufacture of tooling, prototypes and precision machined and EDM components for a wide variety of industries. Because of the new generation of high-speed Wire & Sinker EDM machines, manufacturers increasingly are discovering that EDM can produce many parts more economically than conventional machining. Today, EDM competes seriously with such machining processes as milling broaching and grinding. While most consider EDM for Die & Mold work, Unified Tool will also use their state-of-art EDM machines for applications such as aerospace and medical components.
